Daniil Medvedev v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, with the current head-to-head record one match apiece. Sousa won their previous encounter on clay in Estoril last year, with Medvedev avenging that defeat on the hard courts of Seoul.

Medvedev, Out of His Comfort Zone

World number 14 Medvedev is very much more at home on hard courts than clay. In fact he finished the 2018 season with more hard court wins than any other player on the ATP tour, and underlined that form by picking up the 4th title of his senior career in Sofia earlier this year.

Results since then have not matched that level, with his best result coming in Miami, where he reached the third round before losing to Roger Federer.

This will be his first match on clay this year, but he has an exceedingly poor record on the surface; he has won just twice on clay, and suffered 11 losses on it over the past three seasons.

Sousa Back on his Favourite Surface after Tough Year

By contrast, Sousa is back on a surface he likes. The world number 43 has not enjoyed the best of years so far, with Melbourne and Miami being the only two events where he has won more than two matches.

Apart from that he has exited the other tournaments he has entered early, including the South American clay court events in Buenos Aires, Rio and Sao Paolo. he is not in good form coming into Monte-Carlo.

Despite this, he regards himself as a clay court specialist, and picked up the last of his three senior ATP titles on that surface in Estoril last May. Renowned for his serve and forehand, he is a tough and obdurate opponent and mentally strong.

Medvedev v Sousa Predictions & Tips

Despite being the seed and higher ranked player, Medvedev will start as the underdog for this match. That is based purely on the fact that the match is being played on clay, a surface on which he struggles. Sousa beat him on clay in their one and only match to date on the surface, and will be favourite to do so again.

Tip: Sousa to win: 8/5 (Unibet)
