Players In Form

Cameron Norrie

The British number one has had a flying start to the season so far, getting all the way to the round of 16 of the Australian Open, defeating the likes of Casper Ruud on his way before falling just short in a final set tie breaker to high flying Zverev.

The 28-year-old had a great season last year and looks to be building upon that this time out.

He goes into Rio as defending champion and the second seed behind the formidable Carlos Alcaraz, and he’ll be hoping to repeat the form of the Australian Open to lift the trophy once again in Brazil’s biggest city.

Daniil Medvedev

Even though the world number 3 may have had heartbreak at the Australian Open, going 2-0 up in sets in the final before ultimate defeat to Jannik Sinner, the former world number 1 still showed great form to storm his wat to said final.

Daniil broke the record for most time on the courts at an Australian Open and has had a well-deserved rest before picking the racket back up this week in Qatar.

He goes into the competition as the number one seed and the favourite to grab the trophy in Doha.

He will have to battle the likes of Alexander Bublik, however, who took the crown in Montpellier this month and will look to add his fifth this time out.

Elena Rybakina

It wasn’t long ago that Rybakina was on the other side of this list, after a disappointing second round exit in the Australian Open.

But the Kazakh national has rebounded brilliantly, grabbing victory In the massively challenging Abu Dhabi Open, dropping just two sets on her way to the trophy.

She’ll look to carry on her golden Middle Eastern tour this week in Dubai, and with world number 1 Iga Swiatek seemingly out of form, she has to go into the competition as one of if not the absolute favourite to lift the trophy.

Players Out of Form

Beatriz Haddad Maia

Haddad Maia had a personal best season last time out but looks to have failed to carry it on to the same extent this time.

The Brazilian sits 3 places behind her personal best ranking, at 13th in the world, and went out to unsees Timofeeva in the third round of the Australian Open.

Whilst this is the best round she has ever reached in the tournament; she would still be hoping for more after getting far last year’s slams.

She did well to get past an out of form Ons Jabeur in Abu Dhabi last time out, but then disappointingly fell in three sets to Kasatkina in the semifinals.

She will hope to end the inconsistency in Dubai, but against a tough lineup, a victory in UAE may be a high ask.

Iga Swiatek

The world number 1 has gotten used to the high standards placed on her since she stormed to the top of the rankings, and the 22-year-old looks to have a record-breaking career ahead of her.

She has hit something of a roadblock this year, however, falling well below her high standards set last season.

She only managed to reach the round of 32 in the Australian Open, going out to the unseeded Linda Noskova after almost falling in the round before.

Dubai will be her first tournament since, and she will be looking to get back to winning ways and keep that world number 1 crown.

Nicolas Jarry

The Chilean had what most would consider a failed outing in the Australian Open, going out in the first round of the tournament to the unseeded Flavio Cobolli.

With a record so far of 4-3 for this season, it’s been a rollercoaster of a campaign so far for the world number 20, who went into the season the highest ranking he had ever been.

He did record his 100th victory in Bueno Aires last week however, with a decisive victory over veteran Stan Wawrinka, and a turn around for the season could be on the cards for the 28-year-old.

Time will tell if Jarry can overcome major opposition in Rio, with world no. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and defending champion Cameron Norrie in the pot.
