Nikoloz Basilashvili v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

These two players have faced off on four different occasions before this match and very surprisingly, the 37th-ranked Fucsovics holds a 3-1 advantage over his more illustrious opponent. While Fucsovics’ first two wins could be put down to the fact they came very early in their respective careers in 2013 and 2014, the Hungarian has also beaten Basilashvili earlier this year at Rotterdam in straight sets in the second round.

Basilashvili’s sole win over Fucsovics came at the 2015 Wimbledon in a qualifying round which should makes it an interesting match-up before their Monte-Carlo Masters opener.

Struggling Start to the Year for Basilashvili

After having won his first two titles at the ATP level last season, the Georgian’s new year hasn’t gone as well as he would have thought so far. With a win-loss record of 9-7 this season, he will hope to recapture some of the form he had shown on clay last season after having won 18 of the 28 matches he played on that surface.

This included a title at Hamburg in July but the best part of that win wasn’t that it was his maiden ATP title win, but the fact it came after he had to go through the qualifying rounds. He won seven matches in a row in that tournament to clinch the trophy.

Unfortunately for him, this year has seen him not string together even three wins in a row, with his best result being a fourth round appearance at the Miami Masters where he lost to the Canadian youngster Felix Auger Aliassime. Question is whether he can use his experience on clay from the previous season to push forward here.

And Not Too Different for Fucsovics Either

Yep, much like his opponent, Fucsovics hasn’t had the best of seasons either despite his top 40 ranking. After getting byes in the first round at both, Indian Wells and Miami, he was beaten in his openers, which is why he will need to dig in and take confidence from the first couple of months of the season.

Then, he had made as far as the final at Sofia Open where he lost to Daniil Medvedev but among his scalps there included Roberto Bautista-Agut, a player who has beaten Novak Djokovic twice this year. There was a quarter-final appearance at Dubai too where he went down to Roger Federer and it would be interesting to see how he goes on a surface where he has done reasonably well in recent times.
