Rafael Nadal v Guido Pella Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, once on the hard courts of Indian Wells in 2017, and again on the clay of Roland Garros last year. On both occasions Nadal won with the bare minimum of effort and will go into this match full of confidence.

Nadal, King of Clay Eyeing Title Number Twelve

It has been four years since anybody but Nadal won the title in Monte-Carlo, and the way that he has started his defence of the title this week shows that he is no mood to surrender his crown. Spain’s Roberto Bautista-Agut, a fine player in his own right, took just two games off him, whilst Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov was dispatched comfortably.

More importantly, the world number two has shown no signs of the knee injury that forced him to pull out of the Indian Wells Masters, and miss Miami altogether, which is good news for the legion of fans that he has here, all of whom are keen for him to win his 12th Monte-Carlo Masters title.

Against Dimitrov he did encounter some early issues as he was broken back by the Bulgarian but once he found his rhythm, there was no looking back for me.

Pella’s Good Week Keeps Getting Better

Pella finds himself in the quarter-finals of a Masters Event for the first time, having beaten Laslo Dere of Serbia in three sets, and then, on Tuesday, achieving one of the best wins of his career, putting out the number seven seed, Marin Cilic of Croatia in straight sets.

He then pulled off another excellent victory on Thursday, beating another in-form player in the shape of Italy’s Marco Cecchinato, the number eleven seed, to book his place for the match against Nadal.

This will be a different kettle of fish, taking on Nadal but for Pella, it would be an experience that would make him richer. As far as the result is concerned, there might not be too much doubt about it.

Nadal v Pella Predictions & Tips

Nadal is the overwhelming favourite to win not only this match – 1/33 – but the tournament as a whole, making Pella a rank outsider for this contest at 14/1. Much better players then the Argentine have tried, and failed, to beat Nadal in Monte-Carlo. If he should pull it off, it will rank as one of the biggest upsets of the season.
