Daniil Medvedev v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

The pair have met once before in Moscow last year, on Medvedev’s favourite hard court surface, with the Russian winning in straight sets for the loss of just three games.

Medvedev Surpassing All Expectations in Monte-Carlo

Prior to Monday, Medvedev had only won two of his thirteen competitive matches on clay on the senior ATP tour. However, he has completely belied that form this week, beginning with a comprehensive victory over clay court specialist Joao Sousa of Portugal in the first round, whilst Moldova’s Radu Albot barely extended him further in his next match.

The first of his big wins came in the third round, where he beat the number six seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in three sets.

That, however, was just a prelude to what he did next, defeating the number one seed Novak Djokovic for the biggest win of his career in Friday’s quarter-final. It was the first time he has ever beaten the top ranked player in the world, and now he is hot favourite to achieve another first – his maiden Masters series final.

Lajovic, Surprise Masters Semi-Finalist

If Medvedev is surprised to find himself in the semi-finals, then Lajovic must be even more amazed.

Coming into the Monte-Carlo Masters ranked outside the world’s top 100, he has enjoyed the sort of run that he could only have dreamed about. It began with a routine win against Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri, before he came up against his first major obstacle in the form of the number sixteen seed, David Goffin.

However, the Belgian was despatched in straight sets, and he progressed to meet Dominic Thiem, the only man to beat Rafael Nadal on clay last season, and the losing finalist at Roland Garros. Yet again though the Serb proved too strong, defeating the Austrian in straight sets, a feat he repeated in his quarter-final match with Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego.

He will start a heavy underdog on Saturday, but he has already overturned the form book several times this week, and has nothing to lose.

Medvedev v Lajovic Predictions & Tips

Few could have predicted that either man would be appearing in the semi-final here this week, but Medvedev will start the odds-on favourite at 23/50, whilst Lajovic is priced at 159/100. The Russian is the seeded player, has the much higher world ranking, and won their only previous encounter, albeit on a hard court, with ease. Lajovic has enjoyed a great run in this tournament, but that is surely about to come to an end.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 21/20 (888Sport)
