Victoria Azarenka v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

These two players have met twice before and the wins are split between them. Azarenka triumphed in their first meeting at the Miami Open in 2016, while Muguruza avenged that loss in the 2019 Monterrey Final when the Belorussian was forced to retire with a leg injury while trailing 6-1 3-1.

Azarenka Turns Attention To Stuttgart After Fed Cup Disappointment

Victoria Azarenka’s 2019 tennis season has been littered with a lot of emotional moments. The former World No.1 is still desperately searching for the form that made her reach the summit of women’s tennis over six years ago. Azarenka is still a long way off at the moment as two steps forward are followed by another step back ever since she returned following the birth of he child.

The Belorussian lost in the first round at this year’s Australian Open to Laura Siegemund in three sets and broke down in tears during the post match press conference. Azarenka cited the personal struggles of the custody battle she had been through and that she was still hurting to see her level being considerably low despite working so hard during the off-season.

Her highlight of 2019 was reaching the 2019 Monterrey final but she was denied her first singles title as mother when she was forced to retire midway through the second set against Muguruza with a calf injury. Azarenka was part of the Belarus team that lost narrowly to Australia in a dramatic doubles rubber in the semifinals of the Fed Cup during the weekend. She will need to turn her attention quickly to the clay-court swing starting in Stuttgart.

Muguruza Is Seeking Back-To-Back Wins Against Azarenka

Garbine Muguruza’s form had fallen off a cliff since capturing her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon two years ago. However, she has posed consistently good results as compared to Azarenka averaging at least one title a year.

In 2019, she managed to reach quarterfinals in Thailand Open and Indian Wells before defending her title in Monterrey by beating Victoria Azarenka.

Muguruza, along with Carla Suarrez Navarro guided Spain into the Fed Cup World Group for the first time in two seasons in an epic doubles rubber against Belgium.

Azarenka v Muguruza Predictions & Tips

This is a first match on the clay for both these two players following their Fed Cup commitments during the weekend. Muguruza is naturally the better clay court player as evident with her success at the French Open in 2016. But the worrying problem is that the Spaniard has not been able to produce any kind of that form that propelled her to beat Serena Williams in straight sets in the Roland Garros final.

Muguruza is also coming into this match on the back of two defeats in singles rubbers in the Fed Cup, losing to Flipkens and Bonaventure which does not bode well especially when you consider that Azarenka is significantly an upgrade of the two. I think there is real value in backing Azarenka in this one.

Tip: Azarenka to win: 13/10 (888Sport)
