Denis Shapovalov v Christian Garin Head to Head

The pair have met once before in the Davis Cup World Group in 2016, with Shapovalov winning their encounter on hard courts in straight sets.

Shapovalov, Looking for Improvement after Monte-Carlo

Shapovalov has broken into the world top 20 this year, propelled there in part by his run to the semi-finals in the Miami Masters.

However, his record on clay is patchy, to say the least. He lost all four matches he played on the surface in 2017, whilst his 2018 record was mixed. A semi-final in Madrid and a third round in the Rome Masters on the plus side of the ledger, but a first round exit in Monte Carlo and a loss in the second round in Roland-Garros on the debit side.

Those frailties on clay were again evident in Monte-Carlo last week, when he was knocked out in the first round by Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany. He will be hoping to acquit himself better in Barcelona.

Garin Enjoying a Breakthrough Season

After a successful junior career which him win the 2013 French Open title, Garin struggled for years to establish himself on the senior tour, going almost six years without winning a match.

This year though has been a completely different story. It began with his first direct entry into  a Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, and then he reached his first ATP final in Sao Paolo, before going down to Guido Pella.

Last week, he went one better, winning the US Men’s Clay Court Championship and, in doing so, became the first Chilean in ten years to win an ATP title.

He began his campaign here, with a routine straight sets win over Martin Klizman of Slovakia, storming into the second round with a 7-5, 6-4 scoreline.

Shapovalov v Garin Predictions & Tips

This match is evenly balanced according to the bookmakers with Garin the slight favourite at 9/10, whilst Shapovalov is priced at evens. The Canadian is the higher ranked and seeded player but, based purely on their respective recent form on clay, Garin may just clinch it. We expect it to be a three-setter.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5 (William Hill)
