Dominic Thiem v Jaume Munar Head to Head

The pair have met once before, and interestingly enough in the same tournament in Barcelona, a year ago.  On that occasion Thiem won in straight sets 7-6, 6-1.

Thiem Looking to Rediscover His Clay Court Form

Thiem, the world number 5, can already claim to have had a successful year having achieved the biggest win of his career in claiming the Indian Wells Masters title. Now he is back on the surface where, last year, he snapped Rafael Nadal’s 21-match, and 50-set unbeaten run on clay, going on to lose to the same man in the final in Roland Garros.

The Austrian is still adjusting after his exploits on the American hard courts, and was one of the men surprised by Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in Monte-Carlo last week.

However, his comfortable win over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina on Tuesday suggests he might be getting back into the groove again, and he will be looking to emulate, or better, his quarter-final appearance here last year.

A quarter-finalist last year, Thiem will hope to use clay and the Barcelona Open to break his inconsistent run this season – a 10-9 win-loss record despite having won the Indian Wells Masters isn’t one that will make the Austrian too happy.

Munar Producing Consistent Results on Clay

Like many Spanish players, 21-yearold Munar likes playing on clay. The 2014 beaten finalist in the French Open boys’ event, he announced himself to the wider world in 2016, when, playing on the Challenger and ITF tours, he won 53 matches he played on the surface, losing just 18.

He has shown again that sort of form this year, and has already reached four quarter-finals in clay court events. Although he was beaten by Borna Coric in Monte-Carlo, he has started this week well, coming from a set down to beat Portugal’s Pedro Sousa in the first round, and then enjoying a straight sets win over the number 14 seed Frances Tiafoe.

Thiem v Munar Predictions & Tips

Thiem will start the clear odds-on favourite for this match at 1/3, whilst Munar is priced at 14/5. Munar is a clay court specialist but, as Thiem showed last year, so is the Austrian. He won their meeting last year, and should do so again on Thursday.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 17/20 (Click Here for Best Odds with 888Sport)
