David Goffin v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, with Goffin leading their head-to-head series by four matches to one. Sousa won their last meeting at Indian Wells in 2018, but the Belgian won all their previous matches, including their one encounter on clay at Gstaad in 2017.

Goffin, Wildcard Hoping for Form

Goffin has entered this tournament as a wildcard, coming to Portugal desperately in need of form and confidence. Seeded four here, he has had a very disappointing year so far, with his best result a semi-final in Marseille. Yet, apart from that, he has failed to win two matches in a row in any other event, and has slipped further and further down the rankings.

A strong run in Portugal, he hopes, will not only give his season a much needed shot in the arm, but also help him to begin to rediscover the form that made him a top ten player.

Sousa, Defending Champion in Estoril

Sousa can scarcely claim to have had a better year than Goffin – in his case only in Melbourne and Miami has he won more than two events in a tournament.

Nor has it been a question of surface. A clay court specialist, he did poorly in the South American events earlier in the season, and since the tour has returned to Europe, results have been no better. He was knocked out early in both Monte-Carlo and Barcelona.

However, he does have the boost of being defending champion here, having been Frances Tiafoe in the final last year, and of playing in front of his home crowd.

He got his defence of his title off to an ultimately winning start on Tuesday, beating Alexei Popyrin of Australia, despite dropping the second set.

Goffin v Sousa Predictions & Tips

Goffin will start odds-on favourite at the seed and based on their head to head record. Neither man is in any sort of form coming into this match, and Sousa will have home court advantage. However, Goffin might just edge it.

Tip: Goffin to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
