Angelique Kerber v Petra Martic Head to Head

Martic currently leads Kerber by 2-1 in the head to head tally. However, they last met almost seven years ago in the French Open. Kerber won that game in straight sets.

Martic Looking Absolutely Clinical

Martic started her clay season back in the Charleston Open. Since then, she has lost only one match out of the 11 she has played.

In Charleston, she was a semifinalist losing to Caroline Wozniacki, but not before knocking out Belinda Bencic. Then, in the WTA Istanbul, she made it all the way to the final, winning the first singles title of her career. That was also her first final since the Bucharest Open last year.

She carried the same momentum to Madrid too, knocking out the 2017 Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. Whether it’s Muguruza’s shaky form or Martic’s absolute brilliance, she delivered a fantastic win. Surprisingly, she never had a run like this on the tour this year before playing in Charleston. She lost mainly in the early rounds.

Kerber in Contention for No. 1 Ranking

The German has a chance to reach the top again and to do that, she needs to win the tournament. So far, she is off to a good start with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lesia Tsurenko. While her first service win-rate was poor, she did manage to win six of the eight break points to seal the tie.

Kerber’s clay season so far hasn’t been that great, with a semifinal loss in Monterrey and a quarterfinal defeat in Stuttgart. Barring her final run in the Indian Wells Open, most of her season so far has been along the same lines.

She hasn’t been that consistent this season but has certainly done enough to stay within the reach of the No. 1 crown. Clay is not Kerber’s strong suit, with only three titles out of a total 12 coming on this surface. Since 2013, she has never made it past the third round in Madrid.

Kerber v Martic Predictions & Tips

By all means, Kerber will start this match as the odds-on favourite to win. However, given the form Martic is in right now, it will be a tough task for the German. Of course, she can always come out with all guns blazing and put pressure on Martic from the start, something tells us that won’t be the case.

Expect this one to be a tight call, with Martic on the edge of delivering another upset.

Tip: Over 2.5 sets in the match: 8/5 (888Sport)
