Naomi Osaka v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

Osaka and Sorribes Tormo have met only once, and that was at 2017 Wimbledon in the first round. The Japanese woman won 6-3 7-6.

Osaka Could Lose No.1 Spot This Week

Naomi Osaka won her first ever main draw match at the Mutua Madrid Open when she came back from a break down in both sets to oust Dominika Cibulkova in the first round on Sunday. While that statistic may come as a surprise, Osaka was open about her lack of experience on the clay.

Prior to her match against Cibulkova, the 21-year-old had only ever played 33 WTA tour level matches on the surface with majority of them being in qualifying due to her lower ranking.

She had started her 2019 clay season with two excellent wins in Stuttgart against Hsieh Su Wei and Donna Vekic respectively. However, and abdominal injury curtailed her participation and she was forced to withdraw from her scheduled last four meeting against Anett Kontaveit.

Osaka still has plenty to play for this week at the Caja Magica, including her No.1 ranking. She needs to advance to at least the semifinals stage to retain that spot. If she fails to do that, then either Simona Halep or Angelique Kerber could overtake if they win the title.

Sorribes Tormo Battled To Victory In An All-Spanish Affair

Sara Sorribes Tormo saw off fellow Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena in three sets, breaking serve seven times to book her spot in the second round of the Madrid Open.

Since reaching the quarterfinals in Auckland in the opening week of 2019, Sorribes Tormo’s only other high profile achievement was reaching the last eight in Bogota where she lost in three sets to Haddad Maia.

Her lower ranking means she is unable to qualify in most tour-level tournaments. She played three qualifying matches in Stuttgart before running out of steam in her main draw match against Andrea Petkovic.

Osaka v Sorribes Tormo Predictions & Tips

Osaka has talked about clay being her weakest surface and she is still learning her tirade. But she took out a tough customer in the shape of Dominika Cibulkova in the first round. I expect her to have no problems against the Spanish wildcard Sorribes Tormo.

Tip: Osaka to win in straight sets: 5/4 (888Sport)
