Rafael Nadal v Felix Auger-Aliassime Head to Head

The two men have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 32-year-old Spaniard, and the man 14 years his junior.

Nadal, Looking to Re-Establish His Clay Court Supremacy

It has been a difficult few weeks for Nadal on clay, a surface on which he has been virtually invincible for more than a decade.

His first shock came in Monte Carlo where he was beaten in straight sets in the semi-final by Italian Fabio Fognini, ending his 18-match winning run in the event. Then he suffered another surprise defeat in Barcelona, a tournament he had won on eleven previous occasions, with another straight sets defeat in the semi-finals, this time at the hands of Dominic Thiem.

He now finds himself, for the first time since 2004, at the start of May with not a single title to his name so far this year.

Madrid would be an excellent place for him to set the record straight.

Auger-Aliassime Continues to Burnish His CV

Auger-Aliassime continues to build his impressive CV, with the latest achievement in what already has been an impressive year coming on Sunday when, for the first time, he defeated compatriot and good friend Denis Shapovalov in the first round, winning their encounter in straight sets.

That goes with the first ATP final that he achieved in Rio, and his impressive run to the semi-final stage in Miami. The win improved his record on clay to 17 wins to 9 losses, and although he exited both Monte-Carlo and Barcelona relatively early, in each case he was beaten by top-five players.

Nadal will be the toughest opponent that he could have chosen on clay, but as learning experiences go, there can be none better.

Nadal v Auger-Aliassime Predictions & Tips

Nadal is favourite not only for this match but for the tournament as a whole.  The Spaniard has not been, so far this season, his usual dominant best on clay, but with the passionate crowd behind him, should have too much for the richly talented teenager.

Tip: Games Handicap – Nadal -6.5: 13/10 (888Sport)
