A Promising Start for Kozlova
Ranked in the mid-80s, Kateryna Kozlova has had a good run in Madrid so far. She started as a qualifier and first defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova and followed it with a straight-set win over Aliona Bolsova.
In her opening game of the main draw, she moved past the Chinese player Shuai Zhang in straight sets to set up the clash with Karolina Pliskova.
Considering her performance over the season so far, she spent most of her time attempting to move past the early rounds. Kozlova never really had any discernible success except for Budapest, where she was a quarter-finalist.
Pliskova Survives a Major Upset
World No. 5 Karolina Pliskova began her campaign in the Madrid Open with a three-set win over Dayana Yastremska. She was certainly troubled through the match but ultimately, survived a major scare to win the match 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3.
The match lasted for two hours and 19 minutes and saw Pliskova save five out of eight break points. That match was nothing short of a repeat of her classic encounter in the Australian Open earlier this year against Serena Williams. Pliskova saved four match points against Yastremska at 4-5 to stay in the competition. It was certainly a feat to watch her pull a stunt like that once again.
Given her form this season, it comes as no surprise to the Czech fight so hard. She has been more or less consistent throughout this year – reaching the semifinal in Melbourne, the quarterfinal in Dubai and Indian Wells, and the final in Miami.
However, her clay season started on a shaky note with an early defeat in the Stuttgart Open.
Pliskova v Kozlova Predictions & Tips
Pliskova hasn’t been that clinical on clay yet, but her persistence is definitely commendable. Combine that with her experience, she is bound to start this fixture as a favourite to win. Kozlova will need to bring her best game possible and fight the nerves if she wants to reach the next round.
