Sloane Stephens v Petra Martic Head to Head

They have met twice on the WTA Tour, with their most recent encounter coming in the Australian Open earlier this year. Stephens has won on both the occasions and presently leads by 2-0.

Stephens in a Resurgent Mode

The American No. 1 started the season on a rather shaky note with early losses throughout the Australian Open Series. The trend didn’t change in the Sunshine Doubles either, with her first major breakthrough coming in Charleston where she reached the quarterfinal.

But all of that changed this week when the 2018 Roland Garros runner-up delivered one of the best performance of the season in Madrid. She showcased her love for clay and is certainly in contention for the title now.

She started with a straight-set win over Polona Hercog and then toppled Victoria Azarenka in the second round in three sets. Stephens followed it with a similar win over Shuai Zhang in the third round. That win also marked the first time in her career that Stephens reached the quarterfinal in Madrid.

Turns out, last year’s WTA Finals finalist has found her groove again, this time with the help of a new coach – Sven Groeneveld. Plus, having gotten engaged just last week, she is certainly full of confidence and vigour.

Martic with a Phenomenal Run on Clay

Back in 2017, the Croat suffered from a major back injury and wondered if she will ever play competitive tennis again. Two years and a long injury layoff later, she has reached the quarterfinal in Madrid against all odds.

What makes her run particularly interesting is her build up to it. While her first half of the season was an absolute disappointment, she turned it all around on clay. On this surface so far, she has lost just one match.

Martic reached the semifinal in Charleston where she lost to Caroline Wozniacki. Then, she played in the Istanbul Cup where she won the first singles title of her career. She brought that momentum to Madrid, where with a bit of luck and skill, she reached the quarterfinal.

In the first round, she moved past Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. Then, she got a walkover in the second round, with Angelique Kerber withdrawing from the event. In the third round, she moved past Donna Vekic after putting up a good fight.

Stephens v Martic Tips and Predictions

On one hand, we have a player who is coming in with a superb run on the WTA Tour. With a lot of consistency and form to back her, Martic can definitely topple American No. 1. At the same time, Stephens is looking particularly determined this time and is playing some quality tennis, just like her former self.

This match is a bit too close to call but it wouldn’t be surprising if Croat manages to pull the upset here.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 23/25 (888Sport)
