Serena Williams v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head

In the only match that was played between Williams and Peterson, the American needed three sets to get past her 58th-ranked opponent. This was match was played as recently as the Miami Open earlier this year, which incidentally turned out to be Williams’ last win of the year.

Williams Returns after Injury Break

The American, as aforementioned, defeated Peterson in the second round at Miami before retiring before her match against Wang Qiang in Miami because of a knee problem. She has finally returned to competitive tennis, having not played in nearly two months.

And even when she wasn’t facing any fitness issues, Williams had played just four tournaments in all – starting with the Hopman Cup, she went on to participate at the Australian Open, followed it up with the Indian Wells Open before her one-match campaign at Miami Open.

She made the quarter-final at the first Grand Slam but a third round defeat at Indian Wells and then that third round withdrawal from the Miami Open leaves her with not so much a mountain to climb but at least a rather steep trek to get back to her best.

A not-so-tricky opponent should help.

Middling Season for Peterson So Far

By her own standards, this has been a reasonably decent start for the Swede. A second round at the Australian Open second round in Miami and then a quarter-final at Rabat have been the high points of the year whereas she had to qualify for the main draw of this competition with wins over Veronika Kudermetova and Samantha Stosur.

Now, she faces a very big threat but Peterson will take heart from two factors.

One, the Swede had stretched Serena to three sets in their only previous meeting that came on the hard courts of Miami, and on clay she might just have a better chance. However, more importantly, Peterson would like to believe that Serena might take her time to get into the groove and an early, good start could raise her hopes of an upset.

Williams v Peterson Predictions & Tips

There is no surprise that Williams starts as a favourite but it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise either if Peterson manages to push the American and even win a set. Looking for a set handicap on Peterson for this one.
