Karen Khachanov v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

This will be the third head to head match between these players and each one got a win from the previous two matches.

Khachanov won in the 2018 US Open second round with ease as it was 3-0 for the Russian, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Sonego returned the favour on clay in Monte Carlo, just 26 days ago, and won in straight sets – 7-6, 6-4.

Sonego entered that Monte Carlo match as 70 places worse ranked underdog and Khachanov will surely try really hard to make up for that surprising loss.

Khachanov Struggling on Clay

The 13th ranked Khachanov has a single win in five clay court matches of 2019 despite entering the year with a 60/40 clay record. This is disappointing if we know that he lost to Sonego, Pella, Kohlschreiber and Verdasco, all players who are worse ranked than him.

His only win on clay this season came against Jaume Munar and even in that one Khachanov needed three sets to triumph (6-4, 6-7 and 6-3).

Last year in Rome Khachanov lost in the opening round to Kohlschreiber after an epic match 7-5, 6-7 and 7-6, so a win in this one would bring him some ATP race points and also open up the draw for the Russian as he can’t face Nadal before the quarterfinals.

Sonego is Steadily Climbing the Rankings

The 24-year-old Italian has started this year as the 107th ranked player in the World but has been playing really well since. He managed to win 26 of 38 matches played so far in 2019, 16 of 24 on clay and looks like he will be breaking into the top 50 soon (currently ranked 68th).

His serve has been solid all year long and he can stay in points really long, even against better-ranked players so I think that Sonego has a nice chance of showing everyone that he can be one of the best clay players in the years to come.

Khachanov v Sonego Predictions & Tips

Their match in Monte Carlo played less than a month ago, had 23 games in it, despite ending in a straight-set victory for Sonego. Now one can expect a much better performance from Khachanov and think that he will win at least a set, while also expecting Sonego to be on a high level and win a set himself. This is why one can expect over 2.5 sets in this match.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5 (888Sport)
