Marin Cilic v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head
These two have played each other three times before this and Cilic holds a 2-1 edge over his German opponent. The last time they met was as recently as the previous week in Madrid and Cilic needed to overcome a first set loss to win in three sets to win the encounter. Before that Struff had beaten Cilic in Tokyo last year.
Turnaround for Cilic?
After getting into bit of a form rut, Cilic looks to have turned the corner. He had lost four matches in a row including one on clay coming into the Madrid Masters but then overcame Martin Klizan, Struff and Laslo Djere in three successive matches to set up a quarter-final meeting against Novak Djokovic.
Unfortunately for him, he suffered from a bad bout of food poisoning and had to withdraw from the tournament but those three wins would have given him a shot in the arm coming into this tournament. And that is exactly what he showed against Andrea Basso in his first round match.
Cilic won in straight sets, but he was stretched in the second set, by a player ranked 416th in the world. It will be this second set that might also give Struff bit of a hope coming into this second round encounter.
Struff’s Form Has Tapered Off
When Struff made the quarter-final at the Barcelona Open, things looked bright for the German. After wins over David Goffin and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the same week don’t come that easy and a quarter-final stretch for Rafael Nadal, who needed 24 games to wrap up a win over Struff, would have given the German that confidence going into the rest of the season.
Unfortunately for him, the form has waned. A first round loss at Munich was a crushing one while at the Madrid Masters he went down to Cilic.
Thankfully for Struff, he defeated Grigor Dimitrov – unsure if one can call it an upset any more given the Bulgarian’s fall in rankings – and will now have his chance to avenge the Madrid loss.
Cilic v Struff Predictions & Tips
Cilic will have the confidence and form to start off as a major favourite with offers of 4/7 for his win but we are looking at a three-setter in this encounter that Cilic probably goes on to win.
