This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.
A Similar Run for the Two Players in Rome
Sakkari and Mladenovic started their journey in Rome as qualifiers, and both of them have done an incredible job to make it to the quarterfinal.
The Frenchwoman, who won the WTA Finals doubles last year with Timea Babos, qualified for the main draw in straight sets. She was handed a fairly tricky draw but came out of it, stronger and more confident.
In the opening match, she moved past her compatriot Caroline Garcia and then defeated Belinda Bencic in the second round. However, her biggest win of the season came in the third round against the in-form Ashleigh Barty. She defeated the Australian 6-2, 6-3, in absolute clinical performance.
Meanwhile, Sakkari, who recently won the WTA Rabat and lifted her first singles WTA title, started with a straight-set win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. After that, she defeated Anett Kontaveit, who herself has been in an incredible form over the last few weeks.
Following that exciting win, she faced Petra Kvitova. On the back of Thursday mayhem and Kvitova’s fatigue, she won the match in the third set. The Czech retired at 0-4, giving Sakkari her ticket to the first major quarterfinal of the season.
A Similar Spell on the Tour for them!
Now, Mladenovic is more of a doubles player who has done exceptionally well there. She was the Australian Open runner-up with Timea Babos and is currently World No. 4 on the doubles circuit. However, the same hasn’t been reflected on the singles tour.
It wasn’t until the WTA Dubai that she won her first singles match of the season. Even then, however, she failed to retain that momentum going forward and mainly lost in the early rounds.
As for Sakkari, her form has been more or less erratic throughout the season, barring a couple of breathtaking runs. She was a quarterfinalist in Charleston where she defeated Kiki Bertens. Later, she won in Rabat but with the sole exceptions of these two events, she never really made a dent on the tour.
Mladenovic v Sakkari Predictions & Tips
This is going to be an evenly matched fixture that can very well go either way. While Mladenovic has the experience from the doubles circuit, Sakkari is an upcoming player who is quite confident and aggressive. Both the players have recorded wins over top 10 players in the past and can very well reach the next round.
This will be an exciting match to follow.
