Denis Shapovalov v Benoit Paire Head to Head

The head to head record between the two players is tied at 1-1. They last met in the 2018 Wimbledon where the Frenchman evened the tally with a four-set win over Shapovalov.

Interestingly, the Canadian’s only win over Paire came on the clay surface in Madrid last year.

Shapovalov Finds his Footing in Lyon

The number three seed has struggled a great deal with his form on the clay surface this season. In the four clay events, he played in before coming to Lyon, he managed to win only one match.

That win came after three staggering losses on the tour, in the first round of the Italian Open where he defeated Pablo Carreno Busta. But in Lyon, he has certainly gone way past that and reached the quarterfinal. At the same time, it is important to note that he enjoyed a bye into the second round.

He started his campaign against Ugo Humbert and staged an impressive comeback after losing the first set. He eventually won 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 in a little over two hours. His performance was average but certainly not great enough for a player who is World No. 23.

Earlier this year, he reached the semifinal in Miami.

Paire – A Strong Contender

The Frenchman has had a good run in Lyon so far, starting with a three-set win over Mackenzie McDonald. Then, he moved past Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 in a breathtaking performance to reach the quarterfinal.

Paire has looked pretty good on clay throughout the year. He reached the final in the Marbella Challenger and soon followed it with a winning run in ATP Marrakech, where he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Pablo Andujar.

He also reached the third round in Barcelona but following that, he lost in the early rounds in Munich, Madrid, and Rome. Apart from that, he has looked rather unconvincing on the tour for most of the times.

Denis Shapovalov v Benoit Paire Predictions & Tips

Both the players will be hoping for a good run here, given that the French Open is set to start next week. Shapovalov lacks the experience but makes up for it with a lot of energy and vigour. Paire, on the other hand, is a true clay veteran and can very well go the distance here.

Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 9/10 (888Sport)
