Aryna Sabalenka v Monica Puig Head to Head
The two ladies have met only once and that meeting took place in Charleston earlier this year. Puig capitalised on Sabalenka’s poor run and won the match 6-2, 7-5.
Sabalenka Makes some Gains
The Belarusian’s run on clay hasn’t really gone according to the plan. She started the clay season as a part of the top 10 but now finds herself outside that elusive club. Her performance in Madrid and Rome was rather disappointing, with first-round exits at the hands of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Alize Cornet.
Sabalenka had a decent spell at the start of the season, winning the tournament in Shenzhen and then reaching the semifinal in St. Petersburg. But after that, her form dropped slightly as she started doling out mediocre performances on the tour.
However, in Strasbourg, she has looked quite impressive so far, defeating the likes of Lin Zhu and Laura Siegemund in straight sets. The reigning Connecticut Open champion is poised to go the distance if she continues to play with this kind of rhythm.
Puig – A Strong Contender
Monica Puig reached the semifinal in Charleston earlier this year, where she ultimately lost to Madison Keys. That was the highlight of her season so far, seeing that in rest of the events, she lost mainly in the early rounds.
In the Madrid Open and WTA Rome, she was defeated in the qualifiers itself – something that has been a common theme in Puig’s form this year.
Puig won this tournament back in 2014 but since then, she has failed to repeat the feat again. The last time she reached a final on the tour was in the 2017 WTA Luxembourg. This time around in Strasbourg, she has been quite clinical, defeating Tatjana Maria and Astra Sharma in straight sets.
