This will be the first meeting between Konta and the 22-year-old German.
Konta’s Clay Form a Stunner
It would be fair to say that Konta would have surprised herself as well, to an extent, given the way she has gone about her business in the clay-court swing so far. For a player with a win-loss record of 7-12 on clay over the 2016-2018 period, she has managed to achieve a 10-3 this year already.
And that includes two tournaments in which she made it to the final before losing out on a chance to win her first ever clay court title. Still, it’s a start.
Because not often would she have made it as far as beating Sloane Stephens, Venus Williams and Kiki Bertens in the same tournament on clay and making it to the final where she went down to Karolina Pliskova. To do that at a Premier Mandatory tournament like the Italian Open makes it doubly special which she will hope converts into a good run at the French Open as well.
All of this came after she had a rather poor start to the 2019 WTA season.
Lottner Looking to Make Some Gains
Lottner, the young rising German, has made it to the main draw in Paris after a pretty remarkable run in the qualifiers. She defeated three players consecutively to earn her ticket into the main draw.
This is the first time that Lottner has achieved this feat, with her last couple of attempts ended in early exits from the qualifying rounds. Even if she loses to Konta now, she is assured to walk away with at least $50,000 in prize money.
She is currently World No. 149 but can expect a good boost following her performance in the qualifiers. So far this season, she is yet to make a dent on the tour. In most of the main WTA events, she never made it past the early rounds.
In Lugano and Prague, she reached the second round as the qualifier. Furthermore, Lottner also played in a few ITF events with no success there either.
