Dominic Thiem v Alexander Bublik Head to Head

The two men have never met before – this will be the first match between the 25-year old Austrian, and the Russian-born Kazakh four years his junior.

Thiem – Made to Work for His First Round Win

Last year’s beaten finalist, and one of the pre-tournament favourites, Thiem did not have things all his own way in his first round match with American wildcard and 2015 Roland-Garros junior champion Tammy Paul.

The American took the second set and held a four-love lead in the third set tie break, before the occasion got too much for him, and Thiem was allowed to fight back and take the set, closing out the match in the fourth.

Nevertheless, the test will stand Thiem, who comes into the tournament as one of the form players of 2019, having won in both Indian Wells and Barcelona, in good stead as he prepares for another run deep into the tournament here.

Bublik’s Maiden French Open Appearance

For 21-year old Bublik, ranked 90 in the world, this is all a new experience, never having previously made the main draw in Paris before. Having got here, he then enjoyed his maiden win, beating Germany’s Rudolf Molleker in another four-set match, which lasted 2 hours and 34 minutes.

He is much better known as a hard court player – all but one of his ten singles’ titles on the junior tours have come on that surface. And he has never beaten a player ranked in the top ten before.

Nevertheless, he has nothing to lose in his match with Thiem.

Thiem v Bublik Predictions & Tips

Thiem is the heaviest of favourites at 1/33, whilst Bublik is priced at 71/4. It would be one of the biggest surprises of the year if Bublik were to win – the Kazakh will do well if he even manages to win a set.

Tip: Thiem to win in three sets: 6/5 (888Sport)
