Alexander Zverev v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Zverev and Fognini have met three times. The German leads 2-1 in the series. On clay they have split a win a piece. The last meeting was at the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters where Fognini won in straight sets.

Zverev Fought Past Lavojic In Five Sets

Alexander Zverev was a late arrival to Paris this year after electing to toughen up in the final week before a Grand Slam at the 250-level event in Geneva.

It seemed like an eyebrow-raising decision on first look, but all has gone (and still going) to plan. The German managed to fend off competition from the rest of the field in southern Switzerland and claimed his first title of the season.

His confidence was at an all-time low before that triumph after suffering a slump in form in the first quarter of the year. His best result before Geneva was a runner-up finish in Acapulco. Apart from that he never advanced past the quarterfinal of any tournament.

Zverev’s win in Geneva may be short-term success that could have significant repercussions this week. That victory over Nicolas Jarry in the final only seemed to paper over the cracks after his problems re-emerged and nearly cost him against John Millman in the first round and then Dusan Lajovic in the third round.

Will the 22-year-old have enough left in the tank to take on a red-hot Fabio Fognini?

Fognini Wandering Through The Draw Without Notice

Fabio Fognini made the perfect start of any player during the European clay-court swing when he shocked the tennis world to claim his maiden Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo. While there is no doubting the Italian’s powers on the terre batue, it was a victory no one saw coming after arriving in the Principality in terrible form.

Fognini fared poorly by his standards following that success as he was dumped out in the Round of 16 at both Madrid and Rome respectively. He will now attempt to reach the last eight at Roland Garros for the second time in his career after achiecing that feat eight years ago when he withdrew hurt from his scheduled quarterfinal meeting with Novak Djokovic.

The Italian No.1 has won his three matches in four sets quite convincingly and his latest spurt has now left him inching closer to break the top-10 for the first time.

Zverev v Fognini Predictions & Tips

Zverev has expended so much energy in the last two weeks which is now becoming increasingly evident. It will be interesting to see how he will maintain his fitness levels during the early stages in this match. It seems like the bookies cannot separate these two at the moment with Fognini priced as a slight favorite owing to his recent win over the German in Monte Carlo. The Italian has negotiated his way through a slightly difficult run-in and is in better shape to make the quarterfinal.

Tip: Fognini to win: 10/11 (888Sport)
