Dominic Thiem v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

Thiem and Khachanov have met on just one occasion before. It was in Paris Bercy where Khachanov knocked out the Austrian in the semifinals en route to his maiden Masters 1000 title.

Thiem Favorite To Progress

Dominic Thiem has been the second most consistent performer at Roland Garros in the past three seasons. He is second only behind the undisputed clay King, Rafael Nadal.

The Austrian has reached at least the semifinals at the French Open for the last three years, finishing runner-up in last year’s final. He has maintained that consistency by playing inspired tennis in his fourth round demolition of Gael Monfils in straight sets. It was near impeccable display for the 25-year-old who struggled for rhythm in his opening three rounds where he dropped a set in each of them.

That victory over Monfils ensured Thiem improved his overall Roland Garros record to 22-5 and he has won 20 of his last 23 matches on partisan dirt.

The talented Austrian has captured two titles this year in what is slowly becoming his most accomplished year on tour. He edged Roger Federer in Indian Wells to win his first Masters 1000 crown and then beat Rafael Nadal in Barcelona en route to the title. While the notion is that he will probably have to beat Djokovic and Nadal  back-to-back to win his first Grand Slam title, he will need to be wary of a player whose form has taken many by storm.

Karen Khachanov Reached His First Grand Slam Quarterfinal

Unlike Thiem, Russia’s Karen Khachanov had failed to translate his talent towards success at the Majors. The 23-year-old has come off age and surprised many with his brilliant runn to the quarterfinals of the French Open.

Khachanov is not the most agile player on the tennis tour, but his overall court positioning is excellent and he complements it with his powerful groundstrokes from the forehand wing.

He will make his debut appearance in the last eight at Roland Garros but he will definitely be unfazed by the occasion. Khachanov has already triumphed in Paris albeit at indoor hard-court of the Rolex Paris Masters at the back end of last year where he stunned World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the final.

The powerful Russian has since not won a title, but it is his poor form before Roland Garros which was quite alarming. He suffered opening round defeats in 8 of his 10 tournaments between January and May. However, things are taking a turn for the better and one can only hope we will see a rejuvenated Khachanov for the second half of the season.

Thiem v Khachanov Predictions & Tips

Thiem is the more accomplished player of the two particularly on clay. While both men have abundance of power from both wings, the Austrian has more weapons in his arsenal. Thiem has a crispier backhand slice and a spinning strokes. Khachanov has looked very efficient and effective at the tournament and his domineering display over Del Potro will give Thiem something to think about. The Austrian should have the edge here and Khachanov will not go down without a fight.
