Gael Monfils v Steve Johnson Head to Head

Monfils and Johnson have met on two occasions with both meetings coming on hard courts. The Frenchman won their first meeting at the Rogers Cup in 2017 and then got another win in a three-setter in Vienna at the back end of last year.

Monfils Vows To Bounce Back From Roland Garros Disappointment

Gael Monfils confessed of his lackluster and slow-start to his straight sets defeat at the hands of Dominic Thiem at the French Open. While the Frenchman was widely expected to play second fiddle to the talented Austrian who went on to finish runner-up, it was not expected of Thiem to easily dispatch him as he did.

Monfils had endured some traumatic injury troubles this year, but he has still enjoyed a decent season. With a title win in Rotterdam and semifinals in Sofia and Dubai, he had set his targets so high for the European clay-court swing.

The 32-year-old was beaten to the relatively unknown but fast rising star Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Estoril. He then lost to Roger Federer in Madrid despite holding a couple of match-points. A first round defeat in Rome to the inconsistent Albert Ramos Vinolas put the seal on what turned out to be an average clay swing by his standards.

Monfils will hope for a change in fortune on a surface he has previously claimed tennis should not be played on. The Grass.

Johnson Looking To Make It Third Time Lucky

Steve Johnson is still searching for his best form in 2019. The American has only managed one quarterfinal appearance on tour this year (Delray Beach). Johnson has suffered a whopping eight defeats in the first round this year alone and he failed to defend his title in Houston.

The 29-year-old is a winner of four ATP tour titles in his career with three of them coming on grass. That record will make for a pretty good reading for a player who has yet to hit the heights of his last two glorious seasons.

Since making the transformation from college to professional tennis, Johnson was a steady and consistent performer on tour (ranked as high as No.21). However, since recording arguably his best year on tour in 2016 when he won his first ATP title along with a number of brilliant results that year, he has not come close to matching those exploits.

Can a good week in Stuttgart kick-start his disappointing 2019?

Monfils v Johnson Predictions & Tips

Monfils and Johnson have played two matches before and it was electric tennis in both. The Frenchman needed three sets to win both encounters and this almost feels like another one that is destined to go the distance. With the nature of fast travelling balls on grass, Monfils may not be in the groove to muscle winners as he always does, but Johnson has been horrendous off late.

Tip: Monfils to win in three sets: 6/4 (888Sport)
