Angelique Kerber Splits with Coach after Wimbledon Debacle

A second round exit at the 2019 Wimbledon followed a string of poor results for Angelique Kerber and that has resulted in the German taking a call to part ways with her coach Rainer Schuttler.

Schuttler, himself a former world number five in the men’s singles rankings, has coached Sergiy Stakhovsky and Vasek Pospisil in the past and was in his first year as the coach of Kerber.

Kerber has won three Grand Slam titles including the 2018 Wimbledon and had entered this year’s competition as the defending champion as a result. However, she fell to Lauren Davis of USA in the second round after being up a set and that resulted in this sacking.

The German thanked Schuttler for his help but spoke of the need for a new beginning.

She tweeted:

“Moving forward, it’s never easy to change – especially when you work with great people like Rainer. But for now, we’ve decided that it’s the right time for a fresh start. He has become a friend and I‘m thankful for his hard work & dedication in the last months.”

Kerber’s issues are probably not just restricted to her result at Wimbledon but the way her season has gone so far.

After having split up with Wim Fissette at the end of the previous season, Kerber has been a finalist at Indian Wells and Eastbourne this year but hasn’t won a single title yet. She lost to youngster Bianca Andreescu at Indian Wells while Karolina Pliskova was a straight-set winner over her at Eastbourne.

Those two results aside, Kerber also failed to make it past fourth round at the Australian Open, and was a first round loser at the French Open this year.
