David Goffin v Guido Pella Head to Head

The pair have met three times before, and Goffin has won on each occasion. The first two meetings were on hard courts – at Indian Wells in 2016, and the US Open a year later – whilst their most recent encounter was on the grass at Halle in June, with the Belgian thrashing his opponent for the loss of just two games.

Goffin, Battling for Consistency

Goffin has had a mixed year, with a string of indifferent results mixed with some highlights. The 28 year old Belgian has not won a senior event since 2017, but there have been hints that he may be about to end that run, reaching the final in Halle only to lose to Roger Federer.

He also got to the semis in Marseilles and Estoril, whilst a quarter final at Wimbledon is also on the credit side of his ledger.

On the other hand, there have also been a number of early exits from tournaments, including his last outing in Washington, where he was beaten by the Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round, Consistency remains a major issue for him.

Pella, Experienced Argentine Clay Court Player

29-year old Pella has been a professional since 2005, but it was not until March this year that he won his first ATP title at the Brasil Open, having lost all of the four previous finals that he had contested.

All of those finals took place on clay which, as his 11 Challenger Tour titles bear testament, is his preferred surface.

Given that background, it is no surprise that his best results in 2019 have tended to be on clay, although he was a surprise quarter-finalist at Wimbledon before losing to Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut. He also reached the semi-finals in Los Cabos last week, but was beaten by compatriot, and eventual tournament winner, Diego Schwartzman.

Goffin v Pella Predictions & Tips

Goffin is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 7/15, whilst Pella is priced at 45/23. Goffin has a 100% record against his opponent and thrashed him in their last meeting. Whilst the match may not be so one-sided this time, the Belgian should still win with ease.

Tip: Goffin to win in straight sets: 10/11 (888Sport)
