Petra Kvitova v Maria Sakkari Head to Head
The two ladies have met twice on the tour and the tally currently stands at 1-1. Both of those meetings came in 2019 itself, with their most recent one dating to the Italian Open. Kvitova withdrew from that match in the final set with an arm injury.
A Tricky Return for Kvitova
Just six months ago, Kvitova was making her way through the tour with an imposing form and not a single trouble in sight. She won the Sydney International and later was the runner-up in the Australian Open and WTA Dubai. Continuing on this same confident run, she even won the Stuttgart Open.
She was now within the earshot of World No. 1 ranking but then, tragedy struck. A series of arm injuries kept her out of the play erratically. Even though she didn’t incur any serious loss in the rankings, the subsequent loss in form is a bit too much to deal with.
Following her retirement from the Italian Open, she missed the remainder of the clay swing and returned to action in Wimbledon. Shortly after her fourth-round defeat to Johanna Konta, she pulled out of the Rogers Cup with a left arm injury.
However, over the last few days, Kvitova has looked quite comfortable and by the looks of her social media posts, she is ready to get the ball rolling and find her groove. Her win-loss tally at the moment stands at 31-9, better than many seasoned players on the tour.
Sakkari with a Dominating Start
In a bid to build some form for the US Open, Sakkari started her run in Cincinnati with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Camila Giorgi. She will be pleased with her performance, especially considering that just last week in Toronto, she was stunned by Alison Riske in the opener.
Sakkari has had a year to be proud of by all means – she won her maiden singles title in Morocco and later was a semifinalist in Rome. However, she has failed to display this kind of form consistently. Following her title run in Morocco, she had a few erratic spells up until the San Jose Open, where she made it to the semifinal.
That was quite a run, as she pulled a rabbit out of the hat by knocking out Elina Svitolina in the quarters.
Kvitova v Sakkari Predictions & Tips
Right off the bat, we can expect a three-setter. This is Kvitova’s first match since the Wimbledon and as experienced she may be, she is coming off an arm injury which is far more precarious than anything else. We can expect her to cautiously look for a win. As for Sakkari, she has been in an erratic form and that may not be enough to deliver the upset here.
