John Isner v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

This will be the first match ever between Isner and Carreno Busta.

Mixed Return for John Isner

Having missed the clay court season because of the foot injury he suffered in the final of the Miami Masters, Isner’s return to tennis saw him getting knocked out from the second round at Wimbledon. However he returned to win the title at Newport, but since then has struggled to get going on the hard court surfaces.

A first round loss at Atlanta, just one win at the Washington Open and then another second round exit at the Rogers Cup have all been a cause for concern but what will worry him the most is the manner of his win in round one here. He started off the way he does usually, winning the first set in a tie-breaker but then lost the second 1-6 before wrapping up the match in three.

Isner’s record at Cincinnati also is curiously mixed. There has been one final, way back in 2013 where he lost to Rafael Nadal and he made it to the semi-final in 2017 too, where he went down to Grigor Dimitrov. Those two aside, however, his win-loss record at Cincinnati reads an appalling 6-9 before this season.

Former Top 10, Carreno Busta Hoping for Turnaround

The Spaniard was ranked 10th in the world at one point but poor results and injury issues this season have pulled him down to 53rd at the moment. So much so that Carreno Busta has struggled even on his most favourite, clay court surfaces.

This year, other than making to the semi-final at the Hamburg Open, the Spaniard has lost his opening matches at Cordoba, Barcelona, Estoril, Madrid, Rome and Kitzbuhel – all clay court surfaces.

Interestingly, it has been a lot better on hard court surfaces after he made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open and then won both his qualifiers here in Cinncinati to make the main draw. In his opening match, Carreno Busta was a straight-set winner over Gilles Simon to set up this meeting with Isner.
