Halep to Assess her Form
Fresh off her sensational performance at the Wimbledon, where she trumped Serena Williams in the final, Simona Halep arrived in Toronto, ready to roar. Things went according to the plan up until the quarterfinal, where she retired from the match with a left leg injury.
In her post-match conference, she stated that she felt Achilles problems since her first match in the Rogers Cup. While that decision to retire was certainly wise, it is still not clear whether she has 100% recovered from it.
It has been a brilliant year so far for the Madrid Open runner-up, whose strike rate is currently at 38-11. More so than that, she has evolved a great deal as a player and appears to be a solid contender for the US Open title as well.
But her leg injury may put a damper on her dreams and this fixture against Alexandrova is the perfect opportunity to gauge that. As a former World No. 1, Halep has achieved quite a lot already and clearly has the firepower needed to tame the Russian.

While Alexandrova has never been among the most consistent players on the circuit, she has always had that certain panache and zest to outperform even the most formidable opponents.
For instance, she was a quarter-finalist in Eastbourne where she moved past Belinda Bencic and Jelena Ostapenko. Similarly, just last week in Toronto, she reached the third round as a qualifier where she fell ultimately to Serena Williams.
The 24-year-old Russian has certainly got the ability needed to put up a good fight: the question remains of her form and consistency. So far, she has reached only one singles final on the tour – the Linz Open last season although, that may change soon.

The only factor that may affect Halep’s performance here is her injury. Alexandrova, being a smart player, will look to capitalize on that with some aggressive play. However, she will need to keep her unforced errors count on the down-low to avoid any serious blunders. All in all, we have a good match at our hands.
