Andy Murray v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

The two players have never met and this will be their first ever meeting on the ATP circuit.

Murray Looking To Resurrect His Career

Former world number one Andy Murray returned to action after hip surgery, earlier this summer during the grass court season. The Scot played both men’s (few different partners) and mixed doubles (with Serena Williams). He followed it with his first singles match upon return, playing at the ATP Masters 1000 where he lost in straight sets in the opener against French veteran Richard Gasquet.

Murray has since mentioned that he chose to take no part in the upcoming US Open, but would instead be playing singles at Winston Salem and maybe another ATP Challenger event in the meantime, in an effort to get his game and conditioning back on track.

The Briton is a three time Grand Slam champion who was world number over 2016-2017, and was part of the often referred to group, The Big Four entailing Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Sandgren Hoping For Return To Form on US Hard Courts

28 year old American Tennys Sandgren spent a considerable amount of his early years on the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures tours before breaking onto the ATP Tour in 2017. With strong groundstrokes on both wings, and a powerful serve and shot-making, his game is well suited to the faster surfaces.

Sandgren sprung into the limelight at the Australian Open in 2018, defeating Stanislas Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem to make the quarter final that year. Though he has not managed to maintain levels consistently, he has had some encouraging runs on the hard courts and grass as well.

A first ever ATP title at the Auckland Open at the beginning of this year saw him break into the top 50 and reach a career high ranking of number 41 in the world. Although his ranking is currently at number 73, he made the second week at Wimbledon before losing to countryman Sam Querrey in the fourth round.

Although the American has not reached the levels he would have hoped to this year at the USOpen Series, he will be looking to performances at both Winston Salem and the US Open to change that statistic.

Murray v Sandgren Predictions & Tips

On paper and on his experience, Murray will always be a favorite in this clash. But, this is a match with Murray looking more to regain confidence and mental acumen in the singles game again. While the result is not the central focus of his matches at the moment, he will look to perform at a good level and then plan what the rest of the season and/or next season look like. For Sandgren, this match is more getting back to where he was at the beginning of the year.

A grinding tussle on the cards, expect Murray to pull off this one off in three sets..

Tip: Murray to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
