Roberto Bautista-Agut v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head

The pair have met three times before, all in 2017, with the Spaniard winning on each occasion. His first victory came in the Miami Masters, and  he followed that up by winning at Roland Garros, and subsequently, in Basel.

Bautista-Agut, Established a Reputation for Consistency

Bautista-Agut has established a reputation for being one of the most consistent performers on the ATP tour in 2019. Although he has only won one title – his 9th career tournament triumph in Doha in January – he has been a regular when it comes to the business end of tournaments.

His best came at Wimbledon, where he was a surprise semi-finalist, but he made the last four in Munich, and the quarters in Melbourne and Roland Garros, as well as Miami, and, more recently, in Gstaad, Montreal, and Cincinnati.

This will be the seventh time that the 31-year old Spaniard will feature in the main draw at Flushing Meadows, but it is a tournament where he does not have the best of records, his best coming in 2015 and 2016 when he made the fourth round in successive years. Having reached the quarter-finals in all of the three previous Grand Slams this year at least, he will be hopeful of matching that record here.

Kukushkin is the Top Ranked Kazakh Player

31-year-old Kukushkin is the only male player from his country to have won a senior ATP singles title, but that was as far back as St. Petersburg in 2010. He has been in three finals since, the most recent of which came in Marseille this February when he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas, but, by and large, his best days are behind him.

In recent years he has spent a lot of time on the Challenger tour, where he has enjoyed a fair measure of success, winning 15 titles in all. His last victory in those events came in March 2018 when he beat Matteo Berrettini in Irving, but the Italian got his revenge in Phoenix 12 months later.

The Kazakh can produce the odd upset on his day – he beat Denis Shapovalov in Marseille – but tends to struggle against the very best players.

Bautista-Agut v Kukushkin Predictions & Tips

Bautista-Agut is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 1/9, whilst Kukushkin is 6/1. The Spaniard has earned a reputation for consistency this year based on the fact that he just does not lose matches like this. It will be a major surprise if this is anything more than a gentle opener for the world number ten.

Tip:  Bautista-Agut to win in straight sets: 4/6 (888Sport)
