Kei Nishikori v Marco Trungelliti Head to Head

This will be a first ever meeting between these two players.

Nishikori Excited For US Open Return

Kei Nishikori has been through a mini crisis during the start of the North American hard-court swing, so he will be extremely relieved to be back to the scene of one of his great achievements in his career.

Despite falling short to Marin Cilic at the 2014 US Open final, Nishikori remains the first and thus far only Asian man to reach a Grand Slam singles final. The 29-year-old has been in excellent form in 2019, snapping a three-year title drought in January by winning the Brisbane International. He went on to make the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Although his level dipped in between Dubai and Monte Carlo, he got back to winning ways in Barcelona where he reached the semifinals.

The World No.7 produced a solid clay-court season where he made the last eight in both Rome and Roland Garros. Nishikori managed to reach the last eight at Wimbledon as well at the 10th attempt, where he lost Roger Federer in four sets.

The Japanese has dampened fears of his recent first round defeats in both the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati, where he confessed to having breathing problems, and said during his presser he is excited to return to New York.

Trungelliti Will Make His Main Draw Debut

Marco Trungelliti is a man synonymous for doing things the hard way on a tennis court. The Argentinean famously made the 1,000-kilometre road trip in a car from Barcelona with his brother, mother and 88-year-old grandmother, when he learnt of an open berth in the main draw of the 2018 French Open for a lucky loser.

This week Trungelliti earned his place in the main draw of the US Open for the first time as he played his way into it rather than taking the difficult road trip. He came from behind in his final qualifying match against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor to reach the first round at Flushing Meadows.

Trungelliti has won only two main draw matches at tour-level in 2019, with both those wins coming on his beloved clay courts in Sao Paulo at the end of February.

Nishikori v Trungelliti Predictions & Tips

Nishikori plays extremely well at US Open. This is probably his best slam in terms of results and consistency and he will be tough to beat. I expect him to get through this one fairly easily against a player who has barely won any matches at tour-level.

Tip: Under 32.5 games: 8/11 (888Sport)
