Novak Djokovic v Roberto Carbellas Baena Head to Head

The two players have never met on the ATP circuit and this will be their first ever meeting.

Djokovic In Search For Major Number 17

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is back in New York, looking to win the last major of the year, and in turn increase his grand slam count to 17.

Despite some unexpected losses at the Masters 1000’s this year, the Serb has won 32 off his last 33 matches since Wimbledon 2018, at majors. His only loss was in the French Open semi-final to eventual runner-up Dominic Thiem.

Djokovic won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles this year, defeating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the finals respectively. A surprise loss at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 last week against Daniil Medvedev in the semi-fnals still does not deter him from being the strong favorite for the US Open.

The world number one has won the US Open on three occasions, most recently defeating Juan Martin del Potro in the final last year.

Can Young Spaniard Pose a Challenge?

Roberto Carballes Baena is a clay court specialist from Spain, who is currently ranked number 79 in the world. Buena started his career on the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures tours, before progressing to the main ATP circuit.

The Spaniard has never been past the second round of a major and has one ATP title winning the ATP 250 Quito Open in February 2018 on clay. He reached a career high rank of number 72 in the world after the win.

Baena, being a clay-courter with a strong baseline game is best suited to the red clay of Europe and South America.

Djokovic v Carbellas Baena Predictions & Tips

Against most opponents on most surfaces and at most venues, Djokovic starts as a strong favorite these days. It is no different here.

Baena will be looking to play to his strengths but unfortunately on US hard courts, baseline rallies against the Serb work against one, sooner or later.

The world number one will be looking to use this as an opportunity to get accustomed to the conditions and the pace of the courts. Expect some good long rallies, but a routine straight set win for Djokovic is the most likely outcome by a distance.

Tip: Djokovic to win in three sets: 1/4 (888Sport)
