Dominic Thiem v Thomas Fabbiano Head to Head

The two players have never met on the tour and this will be their first ever meeting.

Thiem Hoping For Strong Start

French Open finalist Dominic Thiem begins the final major of the year without a lot of confidence since the end of the clay court season.

An first round loss at Wimbledon, followed by a quarter final loss at Montreal and withdrawing from Cincinnati due to a viral illness has been the story of the Austrian’s last month and a half on the tour outside of clay. Interspersed was a quarter-final showing at Hamburg and winning his home tournament at Kitzbuhel, both on clay.

While Thiem does not have an overly challenging draw, before a possible fourth round encounter against Frenchman Gael Monfils, it remains to be seen how well he has recovered physically. The Austrian mentioned himself that he is low on match practice in recent weeks.

The Austrian will be remembered for a phenomenal quarter-final encounter against Rafael Nadal at last year’s US Open which he lost in a thrilling five-setter, often regarded to as the best match of last year’s tournament.

Can Fabbiano Repeat Wimbledon Round One?

Thomas Fabbiano has been on the tour for more than a decade and is currently ranked just within the top 100. His best grand slam results have been third round appearances at all majors but the French Open.

The Italian has shown promise but never had a consistent run on the tour or had results of note and is yet to win his first ATP singles title. His highest ever ATP ranking was number 70th in the world in 2017.

2019 has been among his better years reaching the third round at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. He defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round at Wimbledon, which was the one and only time that he has defeated a player ranked within the top ten on the tour.

Dominic Thiem v Thomas Fabbiano Predictions & Tips

Notwithstanding Thiem’s lack of match practice on hard courts in recent weeks and recovery from viral illness, he still begins as a heavy favorite in this first round encounter.

Fabiano who has not had results of note thus far during the North American hard court swing will need to perform at a high level throughout to match Thiem in a best of five encounter. With a strong serve, and excellent court coverage and groundstrokes on both wings, the hard courts of the US Open suit Thiem the best after clay.

Expect it will take Thiem a little while to get accustomed to the conditions, but a four set win for the Austrian should be on the cards.

Tip: Thiem to win in four sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
