US Open 2019: Basilashvili, Venus Advance, Fognini Becomes First Big Upset in Men’s Draw

Reilly Opelka upset the 11th seeded Fabio Fognini in four sets to enter the second round of the 2019 US Open while Nikoloz Basilashvili required five sets to overcome Marton Fucsovics in his opener. Venus Williams was the other big winner in the day session of the opening day.

The tall-serving Opelka wasted one match point in the third set and then had a second such opportunity taken away from him before completing a four-set win. He won 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to deliver the first big upset in the men’scompetition this year.

There was no such luck for Hungary’s Fucsovics, who took a set lead but then fell behind 2-1 before levelling things off in the fourth. However, the 17th seeded Basilashvili completed a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win to enter the second round where he will play the American qualifier Jerson Brooksby.

Also advancing to the second round was Great Britain’s Daniel Evans. He needed four sets to overcome France’s Adrian Mannarino. He won 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to join Johanna Konta as the second Brit to win today.

Two-time US Open winner Venus Williams barely broke into a sweat as she romped past Zheng Saisai 6-1, 6-0 to reach the second. She could face Elina Svitolina in the round two, if the Ukrainian manages to get past Whitney Osuigwe in her opener.

In some of the other matches, Poland’s Iga Swiatek wasted no time in completing a 6-0, 6-1 win over Serbian Ivana Jorovic. Swiatek, who had made it to the fourth round at the French Open earlier this year, will now take on Anastasija Sevastova in the second round after the Latvian overcame Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets in her opener.

Karolina Muchova was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Elena Rybakina and she will now take on Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Su-wei in the second round. 29th seeded Su-wei had a difficult first round win over qualifier Jana Cepelova, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to reach the next stage.

Australia’s Alex di Minaur also reached the second round with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 while Miomir Kecmanovic won the battle of the Serbs against Laslo Djere.

Alison van Uytvanck won her opening round match against Viktoria Kuzmova in straight sets while Hugo Dellien advanced after his opponent Kwon Soon-woo retired in the fourth set of their encounter.
