An Imposing Start for Serena
Starting her run at the Flushing Meadows as the number seed, Serena Williams met Maria Sharapova in the first round. As a six-time US Open champion and a finalist last season, Williams clearly has the experience and form needed to perform here in New York. Against Andreescu, it wasn’t a defeat as much as her retirement from the match due to back problems. For the same reason, she pulled out of the Cincinnati Open too and that is something that her supporters will keep an eye on as she progresses through in New York.
A Big Moment for McNally
McNally, jut 17 years of age, has got herself a big match ahead of her. Starting as a wildcard, she put up a good performance against the veteran Swiss Timea Bacsinszky in the opener, whom she defeated 6-4, 6-1.
It was an excellent performance by the young American, who has worked hard this year to build her form and get some momentum. In the Washington Open recently, she had a breakthrough run when she reached the semifinal after defeating the likes of Su-Wei Hsieh and Christina McHale. Additionally, she also put up a good run in a couple of ITF events.

While this will be a good match for the fans to watch, there is no doubt that Williams will win this one comfortably. She is light years ahead in terms of experience while McNally is still fresh out of school, slowly finding her groove. This match will prove to be a good learning curve for the young American.
