Nikoloz Basilashvili v Jenson Brooksby Head to Head

This will be a first-ever meeting between Basilashvili and Brooksby.

Basilashvili Has Fourth Round Points To Defend

After a below-par first half of the 2019 season, Nikoloz Basilashvili seems to have turned a corner since his recent title defense in Hamburg.

The 17th seed won two titles last year (Hamburg and Beijing) and reached the fourth round of the US Open where he was involved in an instant classic against Rafael Nadal.

Basilashvili though has been a huge let-down in the early part of the season which has significantly affected his win-loss record, currently at 23-18. The Georgian successfully defended his title at the German Open after taking full advantage of a soft draw up until the semifinal where he beat Alexander Zverev (saving a couple of match-points) and then Andrey Rublev in the final.

His Hamburg success has revitalized his campaign despite early losses in Montreal and Cincinnati considering he did not play in these events last year and had zero points to defend. The big part will be at the Big Apple as Basilashvili aims to repeat last year’s exploits against a player not many have heard of.

Jenson Brooksby Earned A First Win At Tour-Level

American teenager Jenson Brooksby is a player not many ardent tennis fans had heard prior to his stunning upset of former World No.4 Tomas Berdych on Day 1 of the US Open.

In fact, that victory over the veteran Czech earned Brooksby his very first main-draw win at tour-level and his first win against a player ranked inside the top-100.

He is currently ranked at No.394 in the ATP rankings, but he is projected to climb more than 100 spots to around No.280. And should he do the unthinkable to produce another giant-killing upset over the 17th-seeded Basilashvili, then he will break the Top 250.

The 18-year-old will make a decision on whether to turn pro or continue playing college tennis. If it is the latter, he can’t receive the $100,000 he earned for reaching the second round as a condition for maintaining amateur status.

Basilashvili v Brooksby Predictions & Tips

Basilashvili tends to be very erratic at times and he can be frustrating to watch. However, he should have plenty in his locker to beat Brooksby who in fairness, is still a rookie at this level. But the 18-year-old is unfazed by the occasion or the opponent and I think he will make this a difficult match-up for the Georgian. Expect Brooksby to end his fairy-tale run in style.

Tip: Basilashvili to win in five sets: 11/2 (888Sport)
