Andrey Rublev v Gilles Simon Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 40th-ranked Simon and the 43rd-ranked Rublev.

Rublev’s Year Keeps Getting Better

The last couple of months have been pretty productive for Andrey Rublev. The Russian has not only reached one final (at the Hamburg Open) and two quarterfinals (at the Cincinnati Masters and the Winston-Salem Open) but also registered three Top 10 victories, which included the biggest win of his career that came against Roger Federer in Cincinnati.

The 6’2” Russian, who had stunned the world with his dream run to the quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open, seems to be back with the same vigour this year as he looked impressive in his 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 win over No. 8 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round on Tuesday. The match that lasted 3 hours and 55 minutes saw the Greek try a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth set despite suffering from cramps, but Rublev saw off the challenge and booked his place in the next round.

Having missed considerable amount of time on the Tour due to a back injury last year and a wrist injury this year, Rublev seems to have recovered well, and with five of the eight seeded players in his quarter already knocked out, he seems to have a realistic chance of making a deep run in the tournament. The Russian, who also defeated Dominic Thiem in Hamburg last month, will next face French journeyman Gilles Simon.

Going to be a Tough Nut to Crack for Gilles

Simon came into the tournament at the back of a four-match losing streak and it didn’t start all that well for him against the 117th-ranked Bjorn Fratangelo on Tuesday, as the American took the first set 7-5.

The 34-year-old Frenchman, who was the runner up at the Queen’s Club Championship earlier this year, fought back over the next three sets to prevail 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, 7-5 and enter the second round.

A former quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and the Wimbledon, Simon’s best displays at Flushing Meadows were the two fourth round appearances in 2011 and 2014.

Andrey Rublev v Gilles Simon Predictions & Tips

Although Simon is the higher-ranked player, the odds seems to be stacked in favour of Rublev, considering he has been in hot form of late and has had far bigger scalps this year than his rival.

Tip: Rublev to win in four sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
