Rafael Nadal v Hyeon Chung Head to Head

The two players have met twice on the tour, both times in 2017 with Nadal winning on the clay in Barcelona and then at the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris again.

Nadal Raring To Go After Walkover in Round Two

Spain’s Rafael Nadal is in the third round of the US Open, without spending much time on the court yet. A quick first round win against Aussie John Millman was followed by a walkover against another Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis, whose long spate of injury issues seem to continue.

Nadal is a three-time US Open winner and comes in a strong favorite along with world number one Novak Djokovic, as he is in search of a 19th major title.

The Spaniard has had a good year, winning the French Open, being an Australian Open finalist to Novak Djokovic, and being defeated in the Wimbledon semi-finals by Roger Federer. By this late in the season, when the action moves to the hardcourts, Nadal has often complained of wear and tear with niggles that have led to larger injury concerns. The world number two has managed his schedule better this year, and mentioned that he feels rested and healthy.

With Roger Federer off to a shaky start in the first two rounds, and Novak Djokovic complaining of an uncertain shoulder, Nadal’s standing among the favorite to win the major has become substantially stronger.

Chung on Comeback, Inspired, But Tired After Round Two?

23-year-old Hyeon Chung from South Korea sprung onto the scene, with some good results in 2016-2017 and was ranked within the top 50 as a 20-year old in early 2017. He participated in the inaugural ATP ‘Next Gen’ Tour finals in 2017, and won the title defeating Andrey Rublev in the finals.

The following year, he was the surprise package of the Australian Open at the start of the year, defeating John Isner, Alexander Zverev, and Novak Djokovic, to make the semi-finals of the Australian Open before he lost to eventual champion Roger Federer. He followed that with quarter-final appearances at Indian Wells and Miami ATP Masters 1000’s, and was ranked a career-high number 19 in the world.

A string of injuries saw him miss most of the 2018 action thereafter, and has similarly had a start-stop 2019 as well and is currently ranked 141st in the world and attempting to make a comeback of sorts.

Chung played the qualifiers to make the first round of the US Open and played a tough match in round two to recover from two sets down and then a match point down to win in five sets against Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco.

Rafael Nadal v Hyeon Chung Predictions & Tips

This would have been a great matchup, if Chung was in the form he was in early-mid 2018, before his injuries. With Chung still on the recovery trail, it seems an uphill task for him to challenge Nadal, given the form the latter has been in.

Nadal will be rested after the second-round walkover, whereas how well Chung recovers from the grueling five-setter still remains to be seen. The Korean will look to put up a challenge, and that will be a huge boost for him as he looks to get his season back on track.

Expect a good contest, and some good shot making, with Nadal winning in three competitive sets.

Tip: Under 29 games in the match: 10/11 (888Sport)
