Diego Schwartzman v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

This will be a first ever meeting between these two players.

Can Schwartzman Be A Dark Horse This Fortnight?

As the Big 3 grab many people’s attention this fortnight, a number of players outside the Top 20 are slowly sneaking their way into the latter rounds of the tournament. One of those players is the world’s number 21, Diego Schwartzman of Argentina who took advantage of a softer opening two rounds to advance easily.

It may be said that Schwartzman benefited from a kind draw, but he had never beaten Robin Haase in five meetings until this week. So his straight sets win over the Dutchman in the first round was mightily impressive considering the head-to-head record.

The 27-year-old had been in fine form in the build-up to the US Open having captured his first title of the year and his third of his career, when he triumphed in Los Cabos, beating Taylor Fritz in the final. The man from Buenos Aires is looking to end the year just like he started it.

Schwartzman made the semifinals in Sydney and the third round of the Australian Open. He also reached his first final of 2019 at his hometown in Buenos Aires in February. He lost his way after that until he rediscovered his old form in Rome where he reached the semifinals.

Will he keep out potentially the last remaining American in the men’s singles draw?

Sangren Could Be America’s Last Hope If Isner Loses?

With John Isner playing a difficult third round a little earlier against former champion Marin Cilic, Tennys’ Sandgren could be America’s last man standing in the single’s draw.

A handful of top-50 players, including the in-form Taylor Fritz and Reilly Opelka have all been eliminated in the earlier rounds, leaving Sandgren and Isner to keep home hopes intact.

For Sangren, this will be his first third round participation at the US Open and it will come as a massive relief after hitting a rough patch lately. The American made a decent run to the fourth round at Wimbledon and backed up that impressive run with a quarterfinal showing in Newport a couple of weeks later.

But he won only one match in his next four build-up tournaments to the US Open. His lone victory came against Andy Murray, who in fairness is far from 100% ready in singles action.

Schwartzman v Sandgren Predictions & Tips

Sandgren had arrived to New York low in confidence after suffering four defeats in five matches. But he found some form in his opening two rounds, beating capable players such as Tsonga (former top-10 player) and Khachanov’s conqueror Vasek Pospisil.

Schwartzman will start as a massive favorite to win in this one, but expect his to be long one than what the odds suggest.

Tip: Over 37.5 games in the match: 5/6 (888Sport)
