Wozniacki went down in straight sets to the Canadian Open winner, Bianca Andreescu 6-4, 6-4, and went on to liken her Canadian opponent to former tennis star Kim Clijsters.

Seeded 15th in the tournament, Andreescu made it the best Grand Slam run of her career, moving to the round of 16 after beating the former Australian Open champion. This was after she had failed to get off the blocks last year, losing in the opening qualifier of the tournament, but shown what she is capable of with a 2019 to remember.

Andreescu who is yet to lose a match to a Top-10 player, made it her second win in a row against Wozniacki this year. The Canadian won an early break but was broken back next game. However, she created a few more break-points in the sixth game before taking a 4-3 lead.

She held on to win the set, and then raced to a 3-0 lead in the second. Wozniacki showed glimpses of what she is capable of by winning the next three games in a row, broke each other once before Andreescu won another break of serve that helped her finish off her opponent.

Speaking to the media after the match, the Dane admitted:

“I think the one that I can most compare her game to would probably be Kim back in the day, Clijsters. I think because she moves well and she can stretch out and get to some balls and also play aggressive and using the angles. Obviously she prefers the forehand just like Kim.”

In another match, Julia Goerges was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over the seventh seeded Kiki Bertens, and will now take on Donna Vekic in the round of 16. Vekic wasted no time in dispatching Yulia Puntintseva in another match that didn’t last too long.

American Taylor Townsend won a battle of unseeded players by getting the better of Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-2 and will now look to stop Andreescu in the fourth round.

25th seeded Elise Mertens ended Germany’s Andrea Petkovic brilliant run by winning 6-3, 6-3 and she will now take on shock entrant Kristie Ahn who defeated Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 7-5.

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic also moved into the fourth round without having to lift her racquet after her 21st seeded opponent Anna Kontaveit withdrew from their match because of an injury.
