Matteo Berrettini v Andrey Rublev Head to Head

The pair have met twice before. Berrettini won on the clay of Gstaad in 2018, but Rublev got his revenge on the indoor hard courts of Marseille earlier this year.

Berrettini Looking to Make Italian Tennis History

Berrettini became only the seventh Italian ever to reach the second week at Flushing Meadows after defeating the Australian Alexei Popyrin in four sets.

It was a match dominated by serve, and the few breaks there were proved decisive. Berrettini established an advantage by breaking in the seventh game of the first set, which he went on to close out, and then he did it again with a forehand down the line in the ninth game of the second set, to establish a clear lead.

He had chances to break in the third but Popyrin saved each of them to force a tie-break, which the Australian duly won. The fourth set too went to a tie-break, but this time it was Berrettini who prevailed, to book his fourth round place.

Only one Italian has ever got further than the quarter-finals in the US Open – Corredo Barazzuti who was a beaten semi-finalist as far back as 1977 – but Berrettini will have hopes of matching that feat this year.

Rublev Looking to Match 2017 Run

Two years ago, Rublev, who was aged just 19 at the time, became the youngest man to reach the quarter-finals at the US Open since Andy Roddick in 1991. Although he has not got beyond the third round of any Grand Slam before or since, his defeat of Roger Federer at the Cincinnati Masters last month, the biggest win of his career to date, gave notice as to what the young Russian is capable of on his day.

He has certainly fulfilled that potential so far in New York, beginning his campaign here by unceremoniously dumping the number six seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas, out of the tournament, in four sets. He then had a stroke of luck in his second round match with Gilles Simon, when the Frenchman was forced to retire with injury, after Rublev took the first set.

There was nothing fortunate, though, about his straight sets win over Australian Nick Kyrgios in the third round on Saturday.

In a match completely dominated by serve, it was tie-break errors that counted – Kyrgios made them, particularly in the second set breaker when he wasted a four point lead, and Rublev did not, enabling the Russian to take a two set lead. He then clinched the solitary service break of the entire match in the third set to claim victory.

Berrettini v Rublev Predictions & Tips

Despite being the unseeded player of the pair, Rublev is odds-on favourite to win this match at 5/9, whilst Berrettini is priced at 28/17. The Argentine has cruised through this event so far, but he is up against a different calibre of player now than the men he has previously faced.

Tip: Rublev to win in four sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
