Goerges, being more experienced among the two, holds a 3-0 lead over the young Croatian. They last met in the Wimbledon 2018, where the German won in three sets.
Goerges Finds her Rhythm in New York
As a former top 10 player, Goerges has been through quite a rough patch that took her out of the top 25. With an inconsistent, mediocre season, the veteran German hasn’t had a lot to show for in terms of wins or trophies.

Post that, she went on to lose quite early once again in Toronto and Cincinnati. Arriving at the US Open, she had slim odds but so far, has navigated her bracket quite handsomely.
Starting with Natalia Vikhlyantseva, she moved on to defeat Francesca Di Lorenzo and Kiki Bertens to reach the round of 16. Having already delivered an upset, she will now hope to go further.
Vekic, with a Solid Performance
The 23-year-old Croatian has always been an impeccable contender with the ability to win big. However, she has been building her form and honing her skills till now – one of the few reasons why she never made it in the top 10.
But it appears that all of it is about to take her to the ultimate glory. Delivering her career-best run in the US Open, Vekic reached the fourth round after knocking out Richel Hogenkamp, Kaia Kanepi, and Yulia Putintseva.
Vekic was also the runner-up in St. Petersburg and the Nottingham Open, where she knocked out the likes of Petra Kvitova and Kristina Mladenovic. But at the same time, she has incurred a series of early defeats in a majority of tournaments.

The young Croat will start as the favourite here, given her recent run in the Washington Open and Cincinnati. In comparison to Goerges, that performance was a lot better and gives her the chance and momentum to reach the quarterfinal here in the US Open. However, if we are to consider experience, then the German has the edge. All she needs is a little bit of luck and skill and dispatch Vekic.
