Elise Mertens v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

In the four times the two ladies have met on the tour, the tally is evenly tied at 2-2. They last met in San Jose a few weeks back in the round of 16, where the American stunned Mertens in straight sets.

Ahn with her Best Showing

Currently ranked World No. 141, Kristie Ahn has delivered what has been her career-best performance in the US Open and a majority of tournaments, for that matter. Restricting herself on the ITF circuit where she has had her fair share of success, Ahn arrived in New York with slim chances of making it this far.

Yet, here she stands after navigating a bracket that was tricky in a lot of ways. Starting with Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round, who just reached the final of the Cincinnati Open, she set up the precedent to knock out other players and give herself a fighting chance.

She also dispatched the likes of Anna Kalinskaya and Jelena Ostapenko, remarkably without dropping a single set. All of this, coming from a player who lost in the early rounds in the Bronx Open and Cincinnati.

Mertens, Getting her Form in Order

Around the same time last season, the 23-year-old Elise Mertens was making rapid progress on the tour and brought herself close to a top 10 debut. Even this season, she started off on a solid note by winning the Doha Open, where she defeated Kiki Bertens, Angelique Kerber, and Simona Halep.

However, consistency was something that the Belgian failed to fully grasp. She went on to incur a litany of early-round defeats that took her out of the top 20. But then, it wasn’t all that bad as she managed to reach the fourth round in the Wimbledon and the quarterfinal in Mallorca.

At the Flushing Meadows, she has had an easy run, just like Ahn’s. Without dropping a set, she moved past Jill Teichmann, Kristyna Pliskova, and Andrea Petkovic.

Mertens v Ahn Tips & Predictions

While Mertens will be expected to win this match, Ahn will not go down without a fight. This is, in all honesty, an evenly-matched fixture where anyone can come out on the top. The American, despite being out of form and practising on the ITF circuit, has proven herself to be a worthy opponent and player.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 21/20 (888Sport)
