Belinda Bencic v Donna Vekic Head to Head

Bencic holds a 2-1 lead over Vekic, last defeating her back in 2014. However, when the two players last met in the French Open this season, it was Vekic who stunned the Swiss in straight sets.

Bencic, in With the Major Upset

On the back of what can only be described as a sensational, clinical performance, Belinda Bencic delivered the biggest upset of the US Open this season. In straight sets, she knocked out the defending champion Naomi Osaka and gave herself a chance to reach the top 10. This win also marks the first time that Bencic has made it to the quarterfinal here since 2014.

Bencic has looked brilliant through the week in Flushing Meadows. After moving past the likes of Mandy Minella and Alize Cornet, she got an walkover in her third-round bout against Anett Kontaveit. That extra day of rest certainly helped World No. 12 to gather her bearings and momentum.

After struggling with her form for the last couple of seasons, Bencic has turned it all around and reminded us of her winning streak from back in 2015-16. Earlier this year, she won the WTA Dubai title and later, reached the semifinal Indian Wells Open and Madrid Open.

Through the course of the season, she moved on to deliver some impeccable wins over the likes of Karolina Pliskova, Osaka, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, and Aryna Sabalenka. Clearly, the 22-year-old Swiss doesn’t need any extra skills when it comes to facing the top 10 players. She is also more than familiar with performing on big stages as she continues to impress the spectators.

Vekic Earns a Well-Deserved Victory

Donna Vekic’s path to the quarterfinal here hasn’t been that difficult, considering that her bracket became easier with the early exit of Sabalenka. She easily dispatched Richel Hogenkamp, Kaia Kanepi, and Yulia Putintseva in straight sets – wins that saw Vekic play in her element.

In the fourth round, however, she had to fight for three sets against Julia Goerges and at the end, she won with 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-3. With that win, Vekic has delivered her career-best run in a Grand Slam.

Just like Bencic, the 23-year-old Croatian too has had a season to be proud of. She reached the final in St. Petersburg Open and Nottingham Open, and was a semifinalist in the San Jose Open too.

Time and again, Vekic has proven herself to be a strong opponent although, a lack of consistency has always troubled her. But now, with this kind of a run, she has once again moved up to prominence.

Bencic v Vekic Tips & Predictions

This is going to be an evenly matched tie. Both the players have a good history against top 10 opponents and have never been the one to shy away from a challenge. They are young, full of energy, and do not look fatigued at all. Expect this one to be a three-setter where the duo will be tested.

Statistically speaking, Bencic has a much better track record on the whole. At the end, my gut feeling says that she will be the one to come out on the top, but hey, anything can happen!

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 19/20 (888Sport)
