Elina Svitolina v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

The pair have played each other six times before, with Svitolina leading their head to head series by four matches to two. Putintseva won their first two matches in 2012, but, since then, Svitolina has won every time. However, it has been three years since their last meeting in Moscow in 2016.

Svitolina, A Highly Consistent Performer

Winner of the 2018 WTA Finals, Svitolina has had a very good year so far, reaching the quarter-finals in Melbourne, and then the semi-finals in Wimbledon and, again, last week in New York, where she lost to Serena Williams.

Although she has yet to add to her eight WTA titles, she has come close on a number of occasions in 2019, and has become of the most consistent performers on the women’s tour. She reached the semi-finals in Doha, Dubai, and Indian Wells, and the quarter-finals in San Jose and Montreal.

In the process, the 24 year old Ukrainian has climbed back up to three in the world, which equals her highest ranking which she achieved two years ago.

Putintseva, Maiden WTA Career Title in 2019

World number 36 Putintseva won her first WTA career title earlier this year, lifting the trophy in Nuremburg in May, beating the Slovenian Tamara Zidansek in the final on clay in May. That came after losing two previous finals, in St. Petersburg in 2017, and then in Guangzhou last year.

And she comes into this tournament after her exploits at the US Open, where she equalled her best ever performance in a Grand Slam, reaching the third round, and capturing the scalp along the way of the number nine seed, Arnya Sabalenko of Belarus, before losing to the Croat Donna Vekic.

She began her campaign in China with  a re-match with Zidansek, and again emerged triumphant, despite dropping the second set.

Svitolina v Putintseva Tips & Predictions

Svitolina is the clear odds-on favourite to win this match at 6/19, whilst Putintseva is 3/1. It has been seven years since the Kazakh player last beat the Ukrainian, and there is little recent form to suggest that anything is likely to change this time.

Tip: Svitolina to win in two sets: 5/6 (888Sport)
