US Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev has provided an update on the participation of his first tournament in 2020 while Marin Cilic and Maria Sharapova have also given out information on their next competitions of this year.

Medvedev has decided to take part in the ATP Auckland Open that will be played in the second week of the new year, in what will be his first appearance at the ATP ASB Classic competition. He said he looked forward to playing in a tournament he had heard a lot about from his friends.

Auckland Open tournament director Karl Budge said about the Medvedev decision:

“Daniil is in an amazing form right now and only getting better. Not many players have got multiple wins over Novak let alone twice in one year.”

“He’s captured five titles already and I suspect this number is only going to grow. Having the world No. 4 is a huge get for us. He’s one of the highest-ranked male players we’ve ever had come to Auckland.”

Meanwhile Marin Cilic has withdrawn from the Moselle Open in Metz, France, joining Jeremy Chardy on the sidelines. Cilic had entered the fourth round at the US Open earlier this month before going down to Rafael Nadal in four sets.

Russia’s former world number one Sharapova has decided she will be participating at the Upper Austria Ladies’ Linz Open next month. Sharapova, who lost her opening round match at the US Open to Serena Williams, has fallen to 135th in the world following a string of fitness issues.

She has played just 15 matches this season and won only eight of them.

Sharapova said of her participation:

“I have so many great memories of the Linz tournament and I am really excited to be coming back to see many of my amazing fans. I am very appreciative to the tournament and the sponsors and just very excited to play.”
