Andreescu had claimed her maiden Grand Slam just a week ago in Flushing Meadows by beating Serena Williams in the final. Given that her stock has risen astronomically post her dominant display in New York last week, many fans were hoping to catch the Canadian star in action in Osaka this week.

Unfortunately, Andreescu will not be participating in the event in order to recover from a right leg injury.

The Canadian expressed her disappointment at not being able to participate.

She said:

“I’m sorry to have to miss The Toray Pan Pacific Open this year. I know It’s the biggest women’s tennis event in Japan and one that I look forward to playing in in the future.”

Andreescu is joined by Belinda Bencic and Marketa Vondrousova, both pulling out of the event as well due to injuries. Bencic herself reached the semi-final at the US Open, before losing to Andreescu in a tough two-set battle.

The main draw of the Toray Pan Pacific event begins on September 16 through to September 22. Karolina Pliskova is the defending champion, having beaten Naomi Osaka in the final last year but she will not be defending her title. Osaka starts off as the top seed while Kiki Bertens, Sloane Stephens and Angelique Kerber are the other top seeds in the tournament.
