Rafael Nadal/Stefanos Tsitsipas v Jack Sock/Nick Kyrgios Preview

The first match today will be played by Alexander Zverev against Team World’s John Isner. This will be followed by a Federer/Kyrgios face off. The third match of the night will be played by Rafael Nadal and Milos Raonic. Given that Team World face off against the top 10 players in the singles matches, the onus rests on Kyrgios and Sock to beat Team Europe’s Nadal and Tsitsipas in the final match of the night.

With last night’s win, Team Europe has secured a 3-1 lead against Team World. Federer and Zverev, Team Europe’s doubles pairing beat Jack Sock and Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-5, winning the last match of the night. Today’s matches therefore are essential for Team World to prevent Team Europe from further cementing their early lead as each match today will be worth 2 points.

Rafael Nadal has been in impeccable form this season having won the Canadian Open, the Roland Garros and the Italian Open before his victory at the US Open.

Nadal will be playing two matches today the final match with teammate Stefanos Tsitsipas, who had a successful Day 1, winning his singles match against Taylor Fritz. Tsitsipas won the match in the third set which was a 10-point tiebreaker.

The point of concern for Nadal would be his left wrist, which was taped up during Day 1. However, on inquiry during the match, Nadal re-assuredly stated that his wrist was nothing to worry about. He was also seen practising freely before the commencement of the tournament, without any strapping.

Historically, Team World has always been relying on their wins at the doubles matches to equalize their scores but was off to a rough start yesterday where they lost to Federer and Zverev.

Tonight’s match will be a priority for Sock, who is considered to be the best doubles player by McEnroe. Sock, to his credit, put up a fight in last night’s match but to his dismay, the opposition emerged as the better team.

He will, once again, have a chance to prove McEnroe right with his teammate Kyrgios, who has had an early defeat in the third round of the US Open and cited an elbow injury to withdraw from the scheduled doubles match.

With the stakes so high, the ultimate match of the second day will be the one to look out for tonight.

Thiem v Shapovalov Predictions & Tips

Thiem starts as a strong favorite at 4/6, but that is purely due to his positive head-to-head record against Shapovalov. Judging by his recent outings, his form is slightly worrying. This is quite possibly the best chance for Team World to get their first ever opening day victory in singles, and I think Shapovalov won’t blink.

Tip: Shapovalov to win: 6/5 (888Sport)
